Numbers to 10
I
Counting from 0 to 10
We know how to count the things we can see, like our fingers from 1 to 5. But what if there is nothing to count?
Look at your hand, but make a fist so no fingers are up. How many fingers are you holding up?
When there are no fingers, we say there are zero fingers. Zero is written 0. Zero is the number that tells how many there are when there is none.
With both hands, we can show every number from zero to ten.

Definition — Numbers 0 to 10
Here are ways to show the numbers from 0 to 10. | Word | Number | Fingers | Cubes | Ten-Frame |
| zero | 0 | | ![]() | |
| one | 1 | | | ![]() |
| two | 2 | | | ![]() |
| three | 3 | | | ![]() |
| four | 4 | | | ![]() |
| five | 5 | | | ![]() |
| six | 6 | | | ![]() |
| seven | 7 | | | ![]() |
| eight | 8 | | | ![]() |
| nine | 9 | | | ![]() |
| ten | 10 | | | ![]() |
Example
Count the number of apples:
We point to each apple and say the numbers in order:
The last number we said was 6. So, there are 6 apples in total.
Example — Nine and One More
There are \(9\) counters in the ten-frame. We put one more counter in it. How many counters are there now?
Nine, and one more: ten. We do not need to count again: \(10\) is the number just after \(9\). The new counter fills the last empty box: \(9\) and one more fill the ten-frame, and a full ten-frame is 10.
Beyond five, one more is still the next number: five and one more make six, six and one more make seven, and so on, up to nine and one more, ten.
