In the first case, you have 8 marbles. Can you split them evenly?
Now, if you have 9 marbles, can you still split them evenly?

For 8 marbles, each of you can get 4 marbles, with none left over.
For 9 marbles, each of you can get 4, but there’s 1 marble left over.
Numbers that split evenly with none left are even. Numbers with one left over are odd.
